On July 14, the FBI identified 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, as the suspect in the attempted assassination of former U.S. President Donald Trump during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Crooks was shot and killed by the Secret Service seconds after allegedly firing shots toward the stage where Trump was speaking. One rally attendee died, and two other spectators were critically injured. Trump was shot in the ear.
Thomas Crooks was a registered Republican and a recent high school graduate. He made a $15 donation to ActBlue when he was 17, earmarked for the Progressive Turnout Project, which supports Democratic voter turnout. Crooks’ father, Matthew Crooks, expressed his intention to speak with law enforcement before making any public statements about his son.
The shooting shocked Crooks’ typically quiet neighborhood in Bethel Park. Neighbors Mary and Stanley Priselac described the area as peaceful and were surprised by the incident. Crooks’ high school, Bethel Park High School, acknowledged his graduation in 2022 and stated their cooperation with law enforcement investigations.
Law enforcement officials stated that Crooks carried no identification at the shooting site and had to be identified through photographs, DNA, and biometric confirmation. The FBI continues to investigate the motive behind the attack, and social media companies are looking into whether any of Crooks’ accounts were removed.
